I believe everyone has a creative side, whether they're an artist, chef, mechanic, gardener, or even someone who builds robots. Creativity isn't limited to paint brushes and canvases—it's about bringing something unique into the world.
Growing up in a rural community, I thought being an artist meant you had to be perfect. You needed a certain skill that made every drawing, sculpture, painting, or piece of writing crisp, clean, and "correct." Even though I loved color—and especially a brand-new box of 64 Crayola crayons—I never colored inside the lines. (To be fair, my vision had a lot to do with that!)
It wasn't until I was a teenager that I discovered Impressionism and the artists who dared to break those "rules." I completely fell in love with Claude Monet...especially learning that he continued creating even when he was in his 80s and nearly blind. If he could redefine beauty by seeing the world differently, maybe perfection wasn't the point after all. LOL.
Years later, after earning my degree in Horticulture and working at Arrowhead Golf Course in Colorado, I realized my landscaping and gardens were my works of art. The combinations of colors, textures, heights, and seasonal blooms became my canvas, with the foothills of the Rocky Mountains serving as the backdrop. Every flower bed told a story.
These days, my creativity also shows up in the kitchen. I actually cook real meals now! I may start with a recipe, but when it comes to garlic, spices, or chocolate chips...I let my heart take over. LOL.
Around 2018 (I think!), I was introduced to fused glass after one of my ceramic pieces shattered in the kiln. What started as disappointment became one of my greatest creative passions. Over the years, I've noticed something interesting: every glass piece I make ends up bright, uplifting, and full of life—even when I originally planned something dark or brooding. Even my Halloween haunted houses somehow come out cheerful and whimsical. Apparently that's just who I am as an artist. LOL.
I've fallen completely in love with fused glass. I've created countless pieces for myself, friends, and family, and occasionally sell them as well. This year has been especially exciting because I've started collaborating with local small businesses. Together we're hosting creative experiences where we explore topics like the chakras—and soon, the symbolism of trees—while everyone creates their own unique glass artwork.
Creativity isn't about being perfect. It's about expressing yourself, trying something new, making mistakes, and discovering joy in the process. Sometimes the most beautiful creations are the ones you never planned.
